Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Clubhouse?
Clubhouses provide individuals with a Brain Injury the opportunity to participate in satisfying, purposeful activities in a supportive community environment. Members maintain ownership over Clubhouse activities. The experience can improve quality of life, skills, and overall independence.
Why is there a need for a Brain Injury Clubhouse?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approximately 1.4 million people sustain a TBI each year in the United States. Many of these individuals need assistance reintegrating into the community and finding a place where they can work towards their personal goals and contribute to their families and communities. In North Carolina, a large military and veteran population exists that have suffered a TBI as a result of serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These service people need ongoing support to reintegrate into our communities.
What happens at Gateway Clubhouse?
A day at Gateway Clubhouse follows a work-ordered schedule. Members carry out all the tasks required to run the Clubhouse such as answering the phone, taking daily headcounts, paying bills, maintaining the facility and more. We also have social activities and assist members in locating employment.
Is there staff at the Clubhouse?
Yes, the Clubhouse is staffed by professionals who understand the scope of a Brain Injury and are trained to work with our members. However, staff work side by side with members to help them achieve goals and do not deliver therapy. The functions and activities of the Clubhouse are member, not staff, driven.
How do I know if the Clubhouse is right for me?
The Clubhouse is a dynamic community where you make decisions and carry out the activities that keep it going. If you need a place to “fit in” and be among others living with a Brain Injury while working towards personal goals, the Clubhouse might be the place. Members should be independent in self care and mobility and able to participate in Clubhouse activities with limited supervision.
How do I become a member?
If you are interested in becoming a member, you should contact Denise Johnson at 919-662-0940 or by email. During this contact, you can schedule a tour and receive more information. You will also need to complete a short referral form.
How can the Clubhouse help military veterans?
Brain injuries are common among U.S. troops and are referred to as the “signature injury” of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Veterans welcomed home suffering from mild to severe TBI face ongoing challenges including difficulty finding and keeping employment, managing finances, maintaining housing, or interacting with friends and family. Rehabilitation may address some of these needs, but adjusting to civilian life is an ongoing process. Gateway Clubhouse can help veterans increase their confidence, enhance their sense of contribution to family, and reintegrate into the community.
